Council of Europe rejects Communism as a totalitarianist evil

January 27, 2006 ~ 11:15 a.m.

Maybe Europeans havent lost the plot after all.

Goran Lindblad, a Swedish member of the parliamentary assembly of the Council of Europe, proposed a resolution thoroughly denouncing Communism and nearly 65 percent of the assembly voted in favor of it.

For the assembly, the totalitarian nature of communist regimes, past and present, and their subsequent violations of human rights was of concern. The anti-Communist resolution backed by the assembly stated, Totalitarian communist regimes are still active in some countries of the world and crimes continue to be committed. The Assembly strongly condemns all those violations of human rights.

The motion also encouraged former Warsaw Pact countries to assess their history and openly admit their economic and political suffering at the hands of the Soviets. Indeed, the Czechs have already begun this process. In addition, the resolution recognizes all victims of communist regimes, including political repression, pogroms, executions, concentration camp deaths, torture, slave labour, and starvation.

Mr. Lindblads motive for the anti-Communist measure was reasoned on the fact that, unlike fascism, Communism had yet to be fully recognized as an equally brutal force in Europes recent history. As Lindblad himself wrote in his proposal for the resolution:

Whereas another totalitarian regime of the 20th century, namely Nazism, has been investigated, internationally condemned and the perpetrators have been brought to trial, similar crimes committed in the name of communism have neither been investigated nor received any international condemnation.

The successful motion also stated that it was particularly advantageous that the Council of Europe hold this assessment as the central and eastern European countries were now member states of the organization.

Communist parties throughout Europe are, of course, throwing hissy fits over the resolution, likening the motion to McCarthyism. Many in Russia are not amused either, as this rant in Pravda demonstrates. The Commies argue that the Council of Europe was not concentrating enough on the ideology of communism, that they were not open to the fact that these crimes were simply an unfortunate by-product of overzealous regimes. What they dont realize is that there was no way Communism could be enforced without totalitarians and dictators at the helm. People would not voluntarily choose to live that way short of repression and propagandistic brainwashing.

I would have been happy just to see this motion proposed, but for it to actually pass shows that Europeans have grown up and can face the facts about the evils of Communism, which only someone driving a car plastered with anti-war stickers up to Canada would dare to deny.
