A dose of common sense in the Commonwealth

August 27, 2003 ~ 2:03 p.m.

Maybe all federal judges dont have their heads wedged comfortably in their ass-cracks after all.

Example: Judge Richard Stearns, a U.S. District Court judge, ruled favorably to charges of discrimination made by four white men against the Boston Fire Department. All four of the men scored higher than the minority candidates that they were passed over for. Justice Stearns ordered not only their immediate employment by the BFD but also demanded that the men be awarded back pay and the seniority they would have earned by now had they been hired in October 2000, the date of the mens applications.

This decision did not make for a good day for the divide-and-conquer race baiters, needless to say, but it was a great day, and triumph, for common sense and for those who believe that jobs should be awarded on merit, not skin color.

The spokesman for Boston Mayor Thomas Menino said it could set a precedent for all future hirings by the city. It was the first case since 1989 to challenge the BFDs affirmative action policies. Although Stearns originally rejected the case, the 1st Circuit Court of Appeals reversed Stearns decision and ruled that the fire departments modus operandi of reverse discrimination was no longer needed to achieve adequate racial representation.

Thank God Stearns saw the light and has moved to correct things in line with the 1st Circuit Court of Appeals decision of ethics over ethnicity. Ever since the busing disaster of the 1970s, Boston, and the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, has long been the forerunner of the insidious practice known as affirmative action, a.k.a. state-sponsored bigotry, and set the wheels in motion for federal jurisdictions in favor of the practice in public-sector jobs.

Maybe the case of the four white firefighters will throw the cog into the works needed to stop those wheels from turning further, because even white men have to work and earn livings, believe it or not.
