There is no such thing as true conservative criticism of the Patriot Act

August 30, 2003 ~ 12:26 a.m.

Im tossing my hat totally into the ring herethis criticism of Attorney General John Ashcroft, by liberal or conservative alike is complete and pure bullshit.

And I say this as someone who fancies himself a libertarian.

Some Republicans, such as Rep. C.L. Otter (Republican-Idaho), are jumping all over Ashcrofts case, saying the Patriot Act, especially as managed under Ashcroft, has gone too far. Too far in what? Protecting American lives? If you are a libertarian, what the hell else could be so important?

I know conservatives have a genuine claim to sensitivity toward civil liberties, but the attacks of September 11, 2001Jesus H. Christ, does anyone fucking remember that anymore?have changed the nature of what constitutes liberty, like it or not. This is the reality were living in now. Whats more important to you: the safety of your city, your home, your familyor the protection of illegal immigrants named Abdullah or Zachariah?

If you choose the latter, I have a lifetime membership pass in the anti-American Hall of Shame to give you.

Admittedly, there are plenty of quislings in the Republican Party, scared that opposition to the Patriot Act will imperil their chances in 2004. So, those of Rep. Otters ilk will croon about the erosion of our civil liberties under anti-terrorist legislation to gain brownie points with the Left. I understand the tactic; they are trying to steal thunder from the Democrats. But make no mistake about it, thats all their opposition amounts to.

Who in their right mind would oppose the Patriot Act? It has prevented further terrorist acts on our soil and has forced the surrender of several other terrorist suspects to the FBI. Americans have had a blessed twenty-two months of terror-free life under the Patriot Act, enacted in October 2001, and will hopefully continue to do so as long as the Act remains in existence.

To rail against this act is to rail against our Constitutional right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. All of which, in case you havent gathered, is exactly what the terrorists want to rob us of. Want to talk about robbing Americans of their constitutional rights? Then tell me what more important than the aforementioned rights?

John Ashcroft is no angel, and I understand this. I am pissed off at him and the Bush Administration for continuing to prosecute against medical marijuana legislation, and Ashcrofts raids on facilities that provide cannabis for such purposes is nothing short of deplorable. I am pissed off over this futile drug war that Bush is carrying on, just like every other administration, Democrat or Republican. Nixon had the chance to decriminalize marijuana, at the request of his own administration chiefs, and he refused. This, in addition to Reagans worthless Just Say No policy, the subsequent DARE Nazis, and those lying sacks of shit in the DEA have prevented sensible American policy toward marijuana. If only Nixon had listened to the advice of his own men, the U.S. could have beaten Canada at its own game. And wouldnt that have been sweet.

But, of course, all politicians have to curry favor to the pious family values crowd. You know the types. Theyll let their children hang out on street corners, abusing innocent people and shooting pet cats with BB guns, but GOD FORBID THEY TRY MARIJUANA! Oh, the horror! So politicians have to pander to these despicable Christian hypocrites.

But, alas, I am not a single-issue voter and never have been, and if I have the choice between legalizing marijuana for medicinal purposes or otherwise, or protecting my fellow citizens from terrorists that want to absolutely destroy us, then I choose the latter.

I will never forget how Bush stood by the American people and kept the nation strong throughout those dark days of Autumn 2001. And John Ashcroft is a hero for his Patriot Act legislation.

Life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. Remember those words. And ask yourself if the Patriot Act will help you achieve that. If you do, 56 percent of citizens are behind you on the issue.

And if you oppose the Patriot Act, and want to force Ashcroft out, then dont call yourself a conservative. You are no such thing. You are a coward. End of argument.
