Here we golet it be quick and painless

March 18, 2003 ~ 1:24 p.m.

So it all begins today. The inevitable has happened. At the Azores summit meeting, Tony Blair, George W. Bush and Jose Maria Aznar all said, to hell with a second resolution. We're wasting time here. The sooner we get Saddam, the easier the fight will be. France is whining and complaining that the U.S., U.K., and Spain have all jeopardized the U.N., but honest to God, if we had let the House that Jacques "Iraq" Chirac Built dictate U.N. protocol, Saddam would have nuclear bombs to go along with his considerable pile of chemical and biological warfare.

The headlines of every paper proclaim "TIME'S UP" or similar words to that effect. Everyone is on edge.

But take a look at the massive invasion and containment forces that America and Britain have lined up, in addition to the one in seven Iraqi soldiers deserting, and this war will shape up just like the Afghanistan effort did. An evil regime will be toppled and a long-suffering people freed.

You think America is in the wrong? How about letting Saddam stay in power and continuing sanctions while the U.N. does nothing but fart around? Real good idea! We have got to free those people and then give them as much aid as possible (Britain, Canada, Spain, Italy and others will hopefully contribute to the post-war transition). Only then can we say with certainty that all arguments in favor of further diplomacy were pure poppycockand we will be saying thatand we have indeed moved into a new age where pragmatic alliances count, not some swelled bureaucratic agency that is all bark but absolutely no bite.

I pray along with everybody else that this war will be quick and easy with not one life wasted. Even I feel queasy at the prospect that war is actually going to happen. But I can say, firmly, that I will not be disappointed by the result and, even better, that I told you all so.

Back the boys of Britain and America! Do your job, fellas, and don't let high-minded, cynical and unpatriotic nitwits, in either of your countries, demean your efforts. You are all heroes of the highest possible rank! And I salute you.
