A hypocritical peace endorsement brought to you by Bush and Co.

January 27, 2003 ~ 11:53 a.m.

Remember when France trumped us in the impending conflict with Iraq a month ago, bending us to their will to continue further farting around with the U.N.? Well, America had a chance to turn the tables, but did not. Tit-for-tat; whats so wrong with that? But of course, that is not the only reason to engage in loggerheads with the House That Jacques Chirac Built.

On Saturday, pro-government protestorsbacking Ivory Coast president Laurent Gbagboattacked the French embassy and other buildings that had any remote connection to France or French business. French troops moved in against the rioters who are enraged at their countrys former colonialist ruler.

France brokered a peace deal giving northern rebels power-sharing status with the government until the West African countrys 2005 elections. Although Gbagbo urged his supporters to remain calm, said supporters feel that France bullied him into signing the peace accord, which gives the rebels virtual control of the army.

Insurgency cannot be rewarded. Ivory Coast was until recently a stable, peaceful country. The rebels may have valid concernsthey accuse Gbagbo of fanning ethnic tensionsbut their methods do not constitute democratic ways and means.

If the U.S. is serious about waging a war on terror (and the French are not, hence this peace deal is no surprise really), then by what calculus can we defend the accord and urge the Ivorian loyalists to accept it?

At the U.S. embassy in the capital Abidjan, a peaceful rally formed to urge the U.S. to denounce the peace accord. We should have. One protestors sign read Bush Jr. Save Us.

It hurts to know weve let those folks down.
