When it comes to anti-Americanism, ignorance really is bliss

October 06, 2004 ~ 11:36 a.m.

I have to try to be tactful with this entry, because shes a friend of the wifes, but an English diarist has essentially called Americans namby-pamby pussies. Why? Because we dare to take the War on Terror seriously.

Then she linked to a site at the end of her entry that contains excerpts from a book entitled Why America Fascinates and Infuriates the World.

The diarist in question wrote, I was expecting a few people to take offence, or to try to excuse their country's behaviour. OK, here you go, savor it for what its worth:

Like so many others who bash America, Ill bet dollars to donuts (yes, thats how we spell it, get used to it!) shes never even been there. It reminds me a lot of what P.J. ORourke once wrote (and Im paraphrasing him) about the whack-jobs who spend half their days protesting in front of the U.S. embassy in whatever country they come from, then spend the other half waiting in line, hoping to get an American visa.

So we Americans dont know about the rest of the world, and we dont care (according to the Why America site)? Has anyone thought to blame our abysmally poor public school educational system for this, controlled by extreme Left teachers unions as it is, who have routinely taught self-esteem over substantive subject material? So only 14 percent of Yanks have passports? Has anyone troubled themselves to consider the fact that, as American citizens, we enjoy a country very rich in environmental and even cultural diversityplus the fact that, at least before 9/11, we could enter Mexico or Canada with just a birth certificate or drivers license? Americans should want to see more of the world beyond the North American continent, but remember that many Americans have only two weeks vacation time at their disposal, so it suggests that theres some logic beyond why Americans dont often travel very far.

So we wanted to impeach President Clinton for having an extramarital affair? Jesus, it was about more than that. It was about the integrity of the man behind the desk in the Oval Office! We also chased Nixon out of office for betraying our faith. Because Europeans often have no choice but to accept presidents and prime ministers with unsavory pasts and who indulge in insidious practices while in officeJacques Chirac of France is a great exampledoesnt mean Americans have to accept the same. We demand a higher standard, which is what the whole brouhaha over Clinton was really about. Like it or leave it.

Remember, folks, a vote against Bush is your ticket to ultimate freedom of thought and of conscience and all the world will love you for it. Funny how all the terrorists entertain thoughts of anybody but Bush as well. But we wont mention that. The last thing we want is for you to be anxious over hyperbolic terrorist threats. No room for patriotism; its jingoist and racist. So, lets all be humble. Just like the English, for instance.

Well, sorry I dont buy it. When the day comes that the average white Briton is multilingual, has been to America several times and has American friends from both sides of the political spectrum (not just Lefties like themselves), when you can find a range of opinions in the current events section of a British bookshop (as opposed to only anti-Bush, anti-Blair, anti-War on Iraq and Michael Moore screeds), and the nation as a whole ceases and desists with their British is best holier-than-thou attitude, then maybe Ill begin to take seriously the British mindset regarding America.

Addendum: Amen to this!

Polish president slams Kerry after debate snub

The following comes courtesy of The Drudge Report:

Polish President Aleksander Kwasniewski has slammed Dem president hopeful John Kerry for not recognizing Polands contributions and sacrifice to the war in Iraq.

It is sad that a senator with 20 years of experience does not recognize Polish contribution. This is immoral, Kwasniewski told FACTS in an interview commenting on the US Presidential Debate.

It is sad that a senator with 20 years of experience underestimates Polish sacrifice, this is sad.

The Polish President added however that one should consider this was a part of the ongoing electoral campaign.

I do not think this was out of ignorance, the president emphasized on the TVN Facts.

There is one thing which should be stated clearly: this coalition is not just the United States, Great Britain, Australia alone; it also involves participation of Polish, Ukrainian, Bulgarian and Spanish soldiers who have died. It is immoral not to recognize the involvement we contributed based on our conviction that there should be unity in fighting terrorism, that there was a need to display international solidarity and that Saddam Hussein was a dangerous individual of this world.

President Bush acted like a real Texan gentleman, he made sure to show appreciation for other countries involvement in the coalition, Kwasniewski pointed out.
