Yesterday, we were all Spanish

March 12, 2004 ~ 1:46 p.m.

Theres nothing I can really say about the atrocious bombings of the commuter-rail trains in Madrid except to say that the need to take this war on terror very seriously remains urgent and should be the number one priority of anyone who cares about life, liberty and justice.

Are there links between ETA and Al-Qaeda? It seems implausible that Al-Qaeda would join forces with anyone else and that the ETA would stoop so low as to recruit those pledged to jihad to achieve their goal of a separate Basque state. Furthermore, a tape of verses from the Koran were found in the van that was used to deliver the bombs. Spain was also a target of the Islamofascists ire for its staunch support for the Iraq war. The Basque separatist ETA has denied the bombings and blamed the attack on Arab resisters.

So it remains to be seen. But if this was the work of Al-Qaeda, we need to ignore the ignorant rubbish about fighting terrorism only breeds terrorism. Those who support that argument saw their chickens coming home to roost in Madrid yesterday.
