My wife, the jingoistic racist???

October 31, 2003 ~ 10:45 p.m.

Warning: A little dirty laundry is going to be aired here, but the story needs to be told. My wife (squirrelrat) wont write about it, so I will.

She got accused of racism the other dayor, at the very least, racialist thinking. The scene of this horrible accusation was a forum called American Expats in the UK, which would perhaps be better known as BashBush.com, considering the extreme Left viewpoints of nearly all its frequenters. One contributor, in particular, who Ill call hell with it Chelle likened Americans to terrorists for the dropping of the A-bomb on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. When my wife offered the viewpoint that there was essentially no other way to deal with the at-the-time fanatical Japanese government other than to bring it to its knees by way of the bomb, she was asked, do you have something in particular against Asians?

My wifea racist? The same woman who publicly bucked her own husbandmein defending the French, arguing the she despises the stereotyping of any nation? (She also, for the record, posted her dismay at anti-French sentiment on the same forum.)

As the link provided above leads straight to the page, you can read all about the debate that led to the charge of racism leveled at my wife. As youll see, after she doubted the argument that the war was nearly over, that the Japanese were ready to surrender, and that they werent cruel to their POWs, she was quoted completely out of text, through selected quotes designed to make her look bad, and accused of having a gripe against Asians. This is completely forgetting, of course, the fact that the Japanese were absolutely brutal to the Chinese during this period of history. Chinese are Asians too, wouldnt you just know it!

Chelle asserted that most historians would agree that it was nonsense that the war would have dragged on if not for the dropping of the bomb. Which historians? Arthur Schlessenger? Doris Kearns Goodwin? Gore Vidal? Would these be the same historians writing the history books that public school students are reading? Excuse me, getting read to them, much more likely.

Read the thread for yourselves and see if you dont notice a very virulent strain of anti-Americanism running through the posts of several of the Americans who added to the debate. (Note that the thread kicked off with a healthy dose of anti-American sentiment.) But Chelles reaction in particular is typical of the hate-America kooks and crazies currently masquerading as the cognoscenti. They set the tone of public debate these days, and God help you should you dare to disagree. Then you are (1) jingoistic, (2) racist and (3) the cause of all the worlds problems.

Its interesting that Emperor Hirohitos Japan should be mentioned in a debate over the American War on Terror, because there is a very interesting tie-in between the two. Before September 11, 2001, Pearl Harbor was the worst act of terrorism ever to be committed on American soil. The perpetrators of this horror were kamikazes, fanatics willing to die for the god and father of their country and people. Are you beginning to notice the similarity to the Islamofacists and Al-Qaeda and the human slime who flew the airplanes into the World Trade Center, willing to die along with the infidels for the good of their God who would reward them? Or do I have to spell it out even further for you?

Very coincidental, say not? They say history repeats itself. I can believe it. Why cant the Left see the jingoism in other countries? Why is the U.S.A. always the sole warmonger?

I can assure you that there is no anti-Japanese sentiment in this household. The Japanese have a great history that is to be respected, and modern-day Japan is a nation of peace-loving, industrious, and democratic people that we both reserve a healthy respect for, and which is no less than they deserve. The Japan of today is not the same nation that it was more than fifty years ago.

Read the thread for yourselves and then decide: Is my wife a racist who is getting her history completely wrong, or is Chelle just a typical bleeding-heart, hate-America, lets-defend-anyone-but-the-U.S. kook having a hissy fit?

Who do you side with?
