We cannot give in

March 14, 2004 ~ 11:06 p.m.

To clear up what I said about the argument that fighting terrorism breeds more terrorism is rubbish, the gist of my argument is that this terrorism is going to breed whether we fight it or not. Measures have to be taken to ensure that the citizenry is safe, via Patriot Act style legislation (although, I admit, I never saw the point behind Patriot Act IIisnt one tough act of anti-terror legislation enough?), and we cannot afford to be isolationist on the Middle East situation. Thats why I thought the war in Iraq was vital. Saddam Hussein and his Baathists may have been secularist, to a degree, but its a moot point. Iraq was still the breeding ground of terrorism.

We can be isolationist, roll over and play dead, appease those thugs and hope we dont get hit. Or we can show the terrorists that we will not give in. Sometimes you have to fight fire with fireits the only way.

What happened in Spain was a tragedy and her population is incensed that, because of Jose Aznars pro-Iraq war stance, they got hit by Al-Qaeda (more than likely). But the atrocity in Madrid is of historical significance to the Islamofanatics. They remember Moorish rule, the impact of Arab culture upon their architecture and their language, and want to revive Islam in western Europe. Spain was a convenient focal point for Al-Qaeda to launch Islamist terror. We cannot underestimate the importance of this fact for those who dont know their history are doomed to fall victim to it. The creepy message from the terrorists stated that it was settling the score with Spain, the conqueror. Old grievances die hard and are not forgotten by zealots.

America suffered at the hands of these fanatics with the attacks on New York and Washington. Australia and Indonesia suffered alike with the Bali bombing. Turkey suffered with the HSBC building bombing in Istanbul. This is a war against the West and support for the Iraq war is nothing short of coincidence. If not for the Iraq war, it could have been Paris, and not Madrid. The message also indicated that Britain, Italy, Poland and Japan have their comeuppance coming, and another threat against America is imminent.

Our job isnt over yet. We must be ever vigilant. We can ill-afford isolationism and appeasement at this time in our history. Those who say we cannot fight terror for fear of more terror are only opening the doors wider for these bloodthirsty savages.
