Burks is back?!

February 11, 2004 ~ 1:41 p.m.

Holy jumpin Jesus Christ, sports fans! If you think seeing Fred McGriff returning to Tampa Bay to don a Devil Rays uniform this upcoming season is surreal, it cant hold a candle to this news. Ellis Burks is back with the Red Sox. (This news broke a week ago, but owing to my busy work schedule and subsequent inability to keep up with the news as much as Id like, Ive only just found out about it.)

The once red-hot prospect, who joined the major league Sox team following their incredibly heartbreaking 86 World Series season, left Boston injured and disgruntled in 1992.

I, personally, was always of the mind that if one were to whisper in the 39-year-old Burks ear, you know, the Red Sox are seriously considering having you back, the former Gold Glove winner would have screamed, hopped the nearest flight to Japan and finished his career in baseball with the Chunichi Dragons, or some such thing.

But, lo! Burks signed a one-year contract with the Red Sox and he will fit nicely in the line-up, subbing at DH for David Ortiz, relieving Kevin Millar at first base or pinch-hitting. He is in good shape and his attitude is great.

I particularly remember seeing Burks play during Bostons miracle turn-around 1988 season. He was a true warrior, and a big reason why the Sox made the playoffs that year (even if, in true Sox fashion, they got bounced out of the first round to a strong Oakland team). Burks will add some nice nostalgia to this years team.

Welcome back, Ellis Burks!
