Call it apathetic or cynical, but I couldn�t help but laugh at the horror Austrians felt when they learned that a man had cut his significant other into teeny bits with a buzz saw.
It�s like, welcome to the real world, suckers.
As always, crime in the capital city of Vienna is seen as the work of immigrants from Eastern Europe, such as Romanians or Bulgarians. While immigrants more than certainly commit their fair share of crime, Austrians are shocked�shocked!�to hear that it could be the work of their fellow countrymen. But then, this is the nation that elected both Kurt Waldheim and J�rg Haider.
The best revelation is provided by a Viennese waiter: �People, it turns out, can be very dangerous.� Gee, dude, you only just figured this out? You�ve hit the big time.
Austria has always been the sort of country that perplexes the mind. Its position of neutrality is based on the wishes of the Austrian people to be nativist and isolationist in a world that is fast becoming interconnected. That isn�t to say that sovereignty can�t be maintained�by all rights, it should be�but to hear Austrians speak about a crime wave is to hear a folk that seemingly have only just woken up to the frightening specter of human nature that other nations, other cities, other people across the world know so well.

Profits from the state�s oil industry have resulted in every Alaskan resident to receive a windfall of $919.84.
Imagine that. A Republican-dominated state that allows personal marijauana usage, with no income taxes and an oil industry so proficient that a state fund was set up with the purpose of saving revenues and from which every resident can reap the benefits.
It almost makes the short days of a long winter season almost worth it.
